Thank you that really clears it up for me. Also, I found out that this poem is a response to an article detailing how poets are separate from the human race. It was his “formal application” back into humanity but by the poems close he discovers that there is not much humanity left to join. I REALLY like this poem!

Hi Erica,

Donald Baker was born in 1923 ( I don’t know if he is still alive) and judging by the references in the poem it was written in the wake of WWII, late forties or early fifties. “Arbeit Macht Frei” was the slogan of the German Nazi Party, for instance, and “Enola Gay” was the name of the plane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. “Modern Man”, then, is post-WWII man.

I can’t see any particular significance in the anthill or the fallen leaf. They are unmoving objects he might practise on, just as the pieplate swinging on twine is a moving one.

Myself, I find the images in this poem unforgettable. “That is poetry.”

Ok well I am wondering why he choose the ant hill and fallen leaf… I am having trouble finding its sigificance. Also does anyone know when this was written? I want to take modern man form the context of the time. If you know plz share- this poem is… intriguing.

really we need to read behind this peom’s lines ;We shall discover that peom has many things to say , many things to tell , and many things to give .Why ? Simply becasue the speaker , here , did his best to creat a peom through peom,
because , according to this peom ,you can make sth tottely
die and unknown to a very alive and famous thing ; This is peotery and it shall give you nothing until you give him yourself , your soul , and your love !!Why not!!
